Hi! My name is Jessie and I’m a third-year engineering student running with a vision to increase resources provided to students to uplift their mental state. As someone who loves to dance and is always on the go, I find there are too few spots to destress alone. As a board member, I will work to increase the number of safe spaces available on campus – including extra mental health-oriented rooms in each dorm, and extra creative spaces and rec rooms. Mental health is emphasized to a certain extent on campus, but if you don’t pay attention to the large number of emails sent daily, you are likely to miss the few events based on student wellness. For those who don’t want to participate in group wellness activities (which, let’s be real, there aren’t many who do) there are few spaces to create or have time to yourself (or get away from your roommate). I’m also running to increase the amount of female representation in STEM fields at Pitt through the expansion of current programs and with the help of existing students. Inclusivity shouldn’t feel like a purposeful separation of groups like it often is advertised, and I’m running to increase communication between those who feel misrepresented and those who are supposed to help represent them. A great way to bridge the gap between these two groups is through mentorship programs, of which I have extensive experience.
