Greetings! My name is Jahari Mercer, and I am running for the position of Board Member on the University of Pittsburgh’s Student Government Board. I am a junior Industrial Engineering major with a minor in Mechanical Engineering. I currently hold positions as the President of the Pitt Student For Social Justice, the Corporate Liaison Chair for the Pitt National Society of Black Engineers, and a member of the Swanson School of Engineering’s Pitt EXCEL Program.
If you asked me who I am I would tell you three things. First that I am Passionate. I am passionate about helping others and leaving a place better than the way I found it. I have brought that passion to the Pitt community and have been blessed with the opportunity to give back to the university in many ways. From speaking at the social justice symposium my freshman year and advocating for more diversity in admissions or being a member of organizations like the National Society of Black Engineers, I always hope to be able to advocate for the needs of others as well as make the campus community a better place for everyone. Secondly, I would tell you that I am a thinker. I love to think and question and dream. Because I like to question, I always want to know why something is the way it is and how can I make it better. Is this the best way to do it or why can’t we maybe try this? One of things I hope to accomplish if elected to board is to allow students more flexibility and use of their meal plan in different aspects of campus catering locations. This came out of a question I had about why can’t I use a meal swipe if I’m buying all of the components to a meal? Lastly, I would tell you that I bring all my skills and experience to the table everywhere I go. In my little life, as my mom calls it, I’ve done a multitude of different things. The biggest lesson I’ve learned so far is to take care of the little things and the big things will fall into place.
The reason why I want to join Student Government Board is so that I can continue to give back to all of my neighbors here at the University of Pittsburgh and advocate for the needs and betterment of the campus community. This campus has been in my heart since I first set foot and that hasn’t changed. I hope to be able to a voice for students who have concerns, who want to see the campus bettered, and who have just as much love and passion for Pitt as I do.
It would be an honor to be able to serve as a Board Member of the 2018-2019 Student Government Board. I always look forward to talking to people about initiatives along the way and can be reached at by email at email@example.com. Hail to Pitt!
